Shipwrecks

Ever since man has sailed the seas, ships have been lost, and seafaring communities have mourned.

Great Yarmouth and Gorleston have had to mourn for its own sons as well as those from foreign parts who have died offshore. The seafaring men of Great Yarmouth and Gorleston have risked their lives for centuries trying and very often succeeding in rescuing mariners from ships foundering on the sandbanks that are found on this part of the Norfolk coastline.

The RNLI whose lifeboat Samarbeta is berthed at Gorleston is carrying on this tradition of selflessness which is the lifeboatman's purpose in life.

It would not be possible to list all the ships that have foundered off any coast and the south Norfolk coast is no different.

Sadly there are always too many.
